Description: Soon after the US entered World War II in the early 1940s, the government increased tremendously. The Department of Defense expanded rapidly, but there was not enough space for all of the new employees. To accommodate these new workers, the government constructed new, temporary office buildings on the Mall. The Department of Defense intended to tear down the structures when their new home, the Pentagon, opened in Virginia. Some of these "temporary" buildings remained on the Mall until the 1970s.
