This plate from an American series shows men on horseback on what would become the National Mall with the Capitol building in the background. The plate shows the original design for the Capitol by Dr. William Thornton, which would be redesigned after being burned during the War of 1812. This style of blue and white pottery was popular during the 1820s and 1830s in America. They mirrored similar European plates of the time. Often depicting patriotic scenes, they were used to show the points of pride, revealing the importance of the National Mall to the young nation.
