Description

Dedicated by President Herbert Hoover in 1931, the District of Columbia War Memorial honors the residents who served and died in World War I. Inscribed on the floor of the domed monument are the names of the 499 DC residents who perished in that conflict. The names of 26,000 residents who served and survived the war are recorded and preserved within the cornerstone of the memorial. In 2010, Congress approved a measure to enlarge the memorial and re-designated it as the National Memorial to World War I.
